How to make contactless payments

Contactless payments have gained popularity due to their speed and convenience

This method, which enables transactions without the need to insert the card in a terminal, is present in many shops, and more and more people prefer it for their daily purchases. We tell you everything you need to know to start using it.

What are contactless payments?

These are payments made by bringing a card, mobile phone, smartwatch or other compatible device close to a payment terminal. There is no need to swipe or insert the card into the reader, making the process faster and more streamlined.

This technology works through short-range communication, known as NFC (Near Field Communication). When you bring your device close to the terminal, the two securely exchange the data necessary to complete the transaction.

How to make contactless payments step by step?

The process to pay contactless is very simple, whether you use a card or a mobile device:

  1. Check that the terminal accepts contactless payments: Most POS (Point of Sale Terminals) have a symbol similar to the Wi-Fi symbol indicating compatibility with this technology.
  2. Bring your card or device close to the terminal: Place the card, mobile phone or smartwatch near the reader. You don’t need to hold it right against it; just keep it a few centimetres away.
  3. Wait for confirmation: The terminal will beep or display a message indicating that the payment has been approved.
  4. Enter the PIN if necessary: Small purchases do not usually require a PIN or signature, but for larger amounts the terminal may ask you to confirm the transaction.

If you use a mobile device or smartwatch, make sure you have previously set up a digital wallet or payment app. It is important that, for the security of your bank details, you only use trusted wallets. From there, you can link your debit or credit card and make contactless transactions seamlessly.

Where can you use contactless payments?

The versatility of this technology means it can be used in many places:

  • Supermarkets and shops: it can significantly speed up the process at checkout counters.
  • Restaurants and cafés: A quick way to pay bills.
  • Public transport: In some cities, you can pay for your bus or metro ticket by simply holding your card or mobile phone up to the reader.
  • Vending machines: More and more snack, beverage and vending machines are equipped with contactless readers.

Advantages of contactless payments

  1. Speed: With just one gesture you can pay quickly and easily. Ideal for small purchases, as it avoids long checkout times.
  2. Comfort: You can use your mobile phone or smartwatch and forget about carrying cash or physical cards.
  3. Security: NFC communication is quite secure, as it operates only over short distances and does not store sensitive cardholder data.

Some recommendations for safe use

Although contactless payments are secure, it is always advisable to take precautions:

  • Set spending limits: If you use cards, check the PIN-less payment limits for peace of mind.
  • Lock your devices: Protect your mobile phone or smartwatch with a code or fingerprint to prevent someone else from using the device to make payments if it is lost or stolen.
  • Control your movements: Periodically review the payments in your accounts to detect any irregularities.
